[edit] Verbs

Most verbs in Japanese come in two categories. The first is 一段動詞, also called ru-verbs or type 2 verbs, and 五段動詞, also called u-verbs or type 1 verbs. Two verbs which don't belong to either category are する and 来る, which are sometimes called type 3 verbs.

[edit] Adjectives

There are two types of adjective in Japanese, い adjectives (known as keiyoushi 形容詞) always end in い, and な adjectives (known as keiyoudoushi 形容動詞) which have a な added to the end of them when they are placed in front of nouns.

[edit] い adjectives

い adjectives change their form for the past tense, negative etc. The Japanese for new is atarashii (新しい). To change it into the past tense you drop the final い and replace it with katta (かった) so it becomes atarashikatta (新しかった). The negative is formed by replacing the い with kunai (くない) to get atarashikunai (新しくない). To get the negative past tense first use the negative version atarashikunai (新しくない), and just like the past tense, drop the final い and replace it with katta (かった) so it becomes atarashikunakatta (新しくなかった).

dictionary form 新しい new
past 新しかった was new
negative 新しくない not new
past negative 新しくなかった was not new
