[edit] Karts

Every character in the game starts with two karts, however more can be earned later on. All the karts are rated in the following categories:

Acceleration
This is the acceleration of the kart, how fast a kart can reach its top speed. Having a high acceleration will also allow you to recover faster after being hit with an item.
Speed
The maximum speed of the kart. A kart with a high speed rating will usually have less acceleration and handling.
Handling
How well or sharply a kart steers. Karts with higher handling rely on their turning ability rather than their drifting ability to steer through turns, leading to a lower drift stat.
Weight
The weight of the kart and the character driving it. Heavier karts will drive slower off-road.
Drift
How hard a kart turns during a power slide. A high drift rating will allow the kart to drift through tighter turns, however turbo boosting on straightaways or "snaking" is harder and miniboosts don't last as long.
Items
A high item stat makes it more likely that you will get more powerful items. Also, some items will last longer such as stars and Bullet Bills. In the time trial mode, the number of mushrooms you receive at the start depends on your kart's item stat.

[edit] Items

Items are given to a player at random after you drive through one of the item boxes on the track. The item received mostly depends on your current position in the race, but also the kart's item rating. Players in first place will usually only receive the Banana or the Green Shell, while players nearer last position are more likely to get the more powerful items such as stars and Bullet Bills.

Image:Mario Kart DS - Banana.png Banana The banana is dropped onto the race track. When a driver runs over it they spin out of control. Normally they are dropped behind the kart, however you can throw them forward by holding up while dropping. Dangled behind the kart the banana will act as a shield.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Triple Banana.png Triple Banana These trail behind your cart and can be dropped one at a time on to the track. Like the Banana they can be thrown forward and also act as a shield.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Green Shell.png Green Shell A green shell when fired will travel in a straight line, bouncing off walls, until they fall off the course or hit a kart. Karts hit by a shell flip over. These can also be trailed behind your cart acting as a shield, and can be fired forwards by holding up.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Triple Green Shell.png Triple Green Shell When activated the shells circle you cart acting as a shield, otherwise they are the same as the single Green Shell.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Red Shell.png Red Shell Red shells will home in on the kart in front. Normally fired forwards, they can be fired backwards by pressing down when firing, however they do not home in on karts when fired backwards. Just as green shells, they can be trailed behind your cart acting as a shield.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Triple Red Shell.png Triple Red Shell When activated the shells circle you cart acting as a shield, otherwise they are the same as the single Red Shell.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Spiny Shell.png Spiny Shell A blue shell with spines on it. These shells fly to the person who is in first place (even if that is yourself) and then cause an explosion. The explosion will also cause any player in its blast radius to be flipped over. The spiny shell target the player who is in first place when the shell was launched and don't change targets (even if that player is no longer in first). This item is very hard to avoid and only a Star, activating a Boo, or throwing a bomb directly behind the kart the moment before it hits you (which is extremely difficult and rare) can stop it.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Fake Item.png Fake Item These look similar to real item boxes but cause karts to spin when they drive into them. They can be dangled behind you kart but they won't stop incoming shells from hitting you. These boxes show up red on the map.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Mushroom.png Mushroom The mushroom gives you a speed boost.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Triple Mushrooms.png Triple Mushrooms Same as the mushroom, each one gives you a speed boost.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Super Mushroom.png Super Mushroom Gives you a speed boost. Can be used as often as you like for a short time (7-10 seconds).
Image:Mario Kart DS - Bob-omb.png Bob-omb Causes an explosion, like Spiny Shell
Image:Mario Kart DS - Bullet Bill.png Bullet Bill You don't need to do anything (accelerate or anything else) for some seconds. Probably the best item.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Blooper.png Blooper Throws ink onto your opponents so they won't see so much anymore.
Boo Hoo Steals an item from an opponent and makes you invisible for some seconds.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Thunderbolt.png Thunderbolt Makes opponents smaller and slower.
Image:Mario Kart DS - Star.png Star The star provides you with temporary invincibility and also a speed boost.

[edit] Nintendo WFC

Mario Kart DS is the first on-line Nintendo DS game. In on-line mode you can race against up to 4 people from around the world.

There is a choice of 4 modes

  1. Continental: Race against people from your region
  2. Worldwide: Race against people from around the world
  3. Friends: Race against people on your friends list
  4. Rivals: Race against people with a similar ability as yourself

Once you select a mode the game will start searching for 3 other people to race against. If 3 people can not be found you may race against fewer people.

[edit] Game Progress

The game takes place over 4 races. The player with the most points after the forth race wins. At this time players may choose to continue racing or quit. If 2 or more players choose to continue, a new game will begin with those players.

[edit] Courses

Every player gets to select a course. The course chosen by the majority of players is selected for play. If there is a tie, the course used is chosen at random.

Several of the more complex and/or obstacle-ridden courses were disabled for online play due to possible latency issues. The courses availiable in WFC mode are shown in these tables:
