[edit] Karts
Every character in the game starts with two karts, however more can be earned later on. All the karts are rated in the following categories:
- Acceleration
- This is the acceleration of the kart, how fast a kart can reach its top speed. Having a high acceleration will also allow you to recover faster after being hit with an item.
- Speed
- The maximum speed of the kart. A kart with a high speed rating will usually have less acceleration and handling.
- Handling
- How well or sharply a kart steers. Karts with higher handling rely on their turning ability rather than their drifting ability to steer through turns, leading to a lower drift stat.
- Weight
- The weight of the kart and the character driving it. Heavier karts will drive slower off-road.
- Drift
- How hard a kart turns during a power slide. A high drift rating will allow the kart to drift through tighter turns, however turbo boosting on straightaways or "snaking" is harder and miniboosts don't last as long.
- Items
- A high item stat makes it more likely that you will get more powerful items. Also, some items will last longer such as stars and Bullet Bills. In the time trial mode, the number of mushrooms you receive at the start depends on your kart's item stat.
[edit] Items
Items are given to a player at random after you drive through one of the item boxes on the track. The item received mostly depends on your current position in the race, but also the kart's item rating. Players in first place will usually only receive the Banana or the Green Shell, while players nearer last position are more likely to get the more powerful items such as stars and Bullet Bills.

[edit] Nintendo WFC
Mario Kart DS is the first on-line Nintendo DS game. In on-line mode you can race against up to 4 people from around the world.
There is a choice of 4 modes
- Continental: Race against people from your region
- Worldwide: Race against people from around the world
- Friends: Race against people on your friends list
- Rivals: Race against people with a similar ability as yourself
Once you select a mode the game will start searching for 3 other people to race against. If 3 people can not be found you may race against fewer people.
[edit] Game Progress
The game takes place over 4 races. The player with the most points after the forth race wins. At this time players may choose to continue racing or quit. If 2 or more players choose to continue, a new game will begin with those players.
[edit] Courses
Every player gets to select a course. The course chosen by the majority of players is selected for play. If there is a tie, the course used is chosen at random.
Several of the more complex and/or obstacle-ridden courses were disabled for online play due to possible latency issues. The courses availiable in WFC mode are shown in these tables:
