Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (スーパーストリートファイターⅡ Sûpâ Sutorîto Faitâ Tsû) is the fourth release in the Street Fighter II fighting game sub-series. Released in 1993, Super Street Fighter II introduced four new selectable characters, Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long and Thunder Hawk. Each of whom, also had their own new stage. The game has the distinct feature to be the first Street Fighter game to use CPS-2 hardware, which was also used for the later Street Fighter Alpha sub-series and other fighting games. In this edition, all of the existing characters from previous versions received new moves for existing characters and numerous other changes have been made.

In the second Street Fighter tournament, Ryu, Ken and other world warriors with different skills and fighting styles compete. While some of the competitors have ulterior motives for competing, others have something to prove. Twelve world warriors fight to work their way up to battling the tournament's Four Heavenly Kings.

[edit] Gameplay

The CPS-1 graphics engine from past Street Fighter installments had been replaced by the improved CPS-2 engine, which offered more memory and faster processing speed. The gameplay, while faster than the original and Champion editions, it was not as fast as Street Fighter II' Turbo. The existing characters' moves were, once again, changed and improved upon. Ryu and Ken's moves are now notably different. Ryu's Hadouken is faster and has a more powerful version that can set opponents on fire. Ken's Shoryuken is now multi-hit with his strongest attacking with flames as well. All the characters received new moves (Zangief also lost two the German Suplex and the Thunder Fire Powerbomb) and some of the existing moves were altered making the game more balanced.

New dizzy icons were added to signify how dizzy the character had become. While stars or birds represented a normal dizzy, angels represented a dizzy that could be escaped from quickly and Grim Reapers signified a dizzy that would be difficult to recover from. Super Street Fighter II also established many new conventions for the Street Fighter series, including a combo hit counting system and bonus points awarded for first attacks, combos, dizzy recoveries, and reversal attacks. A tournament battle mode was added to console versions of the game.

[edit] Other Changes

Super Street Fighter II featured an entirely updated soundtrack using Capcom Q-Sound, sporting applied acoustics making for crisper music. Stereo sound was also implemented. Several character voices were added, giving each character a unique throw and knock-out cry, as opposed to the generic male and female audio samples of previous games. The announcer was also given a new voice from previous games. The artwork and animation was greatly improved over Turbo and all the old endings for older characters were updated and/or redrawn. In edition, all the characters were each given eight different outfit colors.
